William Duncan & Co was established in Glasgow in 1919 and consequently is one of the longest established firms of Chartered Accountants in Scotland.
The opening of the Glasgow office in 1919 was just the first step in the building of a successful accountancy practice which today ranks as one of the largest independent firms of Chartered Accountants in Scotland. The firm's client base represents a broad spectrum of the Scottish business community. Clients vary from the smallest of sole traders and partnership, through small owner/managed companies to some of the largest companies in the country.
William Duncan & Co has offices in Hamilton, Ayr, Cumnock and Tarbert. The firm is under the control of 13 partners and employs 75 staff. All partners and staff have total commitment to the success of their clients.
Since its formation, William Duncan & Co has always placed great emphasis on the development and maintenance of the highest professional standards. The firm's working practices are governed by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS).
As part of the philosophy of continuous improvement and evolution, in 1991 the firm as a whole became members of the UK200 Group. The UK200 Group is an association whose membership represents independent firms of Chartered Accountants from all parts of the United Kingdom. The Group membership has a common aim of providing the highest possible level of service to clients in the most efficient manner available.
Some years later, the firm took on a similar membership with the Scottish Institute who were also by that time providing support for member firms. This close association with the Institute was a natural result of the firm's long term connection with the Scottish Institute. For many years one of the Ayr partners has been the local Secretary and many of the partners have served on Institute committees. It therefore seemed a natural progression to become part of the Institute's support organisation. The UK200 Group provides control external to that already existing in the firm and in addition to the control exercised by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland. To ensure member firms such as William Duncan & Co maintain the highest technical and professional standards, partners and their staff are subject to continuous external training, assessment and review.
All of these characteristics which have lead to the success of William Duncan & Co as a whole can be clearly identified in the individual offices.
Although being part of a professional organisation and having to appreciate that regulation is one of the fundamental aspects of professional life, William Duncan & Co has always looked to be innovative and creative. The firm has tried to align itself to business needs, rather than to strict restrictive practices- hence we view our role as advisers to business as our first priority.
